Settling in Tasmania: Embracing a New Artistic Community

Moving to Tasmania marked a significant chapter in my artistic journey, one filled with new opportunities, vibrant connections, and profound growth. The transition to this stunning island state not only offered a change of scenery but also introduced me to a thriving local art scene that has become an integral part of my development as an artist.

A New Beginning

In 2012, I moved to Tasmania from Jersey in the Channel Islands, eager to start a new life with my husband. The decision to settle in Hobart, Tasmania’s charming capital, was both exciting and daunting. While I had travelled extensively throughout Australia, Tasmania was uncharted territory. I wondered what the art scene would be like in this quieter, less populated state. Little did I know, I was about to discover an incredibly supportive and inspiring artistic community.

Discovering the Local Art Scene

Tasmania, with its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, naturally attracts creative souls. The island is home to a multitude of talented photographers, painters, jewellers, ceramicists, and writers, all drawn to its beauty and tranquillity. This abundance of creativity fosters a vibrant and diverse art scene that is both welcoming and inspiring.

At the heart of Hobart’s art community is Salamanca, a historic area renowned for its sandstone buildings, bustling market, and array of galleries and studios. The Salamanca Arts Centre, housed in these historic buildings, quickly became my artistic haven. It was the perfect place to immerse myself in the local art scene and connect with other artists.

A Supportive Environment

One of the most striking aspects of Tasmania’s art community is its collaborative and supportive nature. Unlike more competitive art scenes, I found that local artists here are genuinely invested in each other’s success. There is a shared understanding that there is ample opportunity for everyone, and this abundance mindset fosters a nurturing environment where artists can thrive.

The local art events and markets, such as the famous Salamanca Market, provided excellent platforms to showcase my work, gain feedback, and build a following. These events were not just commercial opportunities but also social gatherings where artists could share their experiences, challenges, and triumphs.

Growing as an Artist

The supportive environment in Tasmania allowed me to focus on my growth as an artist. Being surrounded by talented and dedicated peers motivated me to push my boundaries and continuously improve my skills. I was inspired by the high standard of work around me, which challenged me to elevate my own practice.

Having my studio in the Salamanca Arts Centre was a dream come true. It provided a dedicated space where I could create without distractions, and the proximity to other working artists offered constant inspiration and opportunities for collaboration. Observing their work habits and learning from their experiences helped me develop a professional approach to my art.

Community and Connection

The connections I made in Tasmania have been invaluable. Building relationships with other artists, gallery owners, and art enthusiasts created a network of support that has been essential in my journey. These connections provided not only professional opportunities but also friendships that enriched my personal life.

The sense of community in Tasmania’s art scene extends beyond the local artists. The residents and visitors to the island are incredibly supportive of the arts. Their appreciation and enthusiasm for local art create a thriving market for artists to showcase and sell their work.

Settling in Tasmania and embracing its vibrant artistic community has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The move provided a supportive environment where I could grow as an artist, surrounded by inspiring peers and an appreciative audience. The collaborative spirit and abundant opportunities in Tasmania have allowed me to develop my practice and build meaningful connections.

For any artist considering a move to a new place, I highly recommend seeking out a community like Tasmania's. The support, inspiration, and opportunities available in such a nurturing environment can significantly impact your artistic journey. Embrace the new, connect with fellow creatives, and let the vibrant energy of a supportive community propel your art to new heights.
